12 Days of Christmas! - Have a Mindful Holiday Season! - Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of 12 Days of Christmas!

The holidays can be a tough time mentally for anyone. With the pandemic ongoing, some of us may have experienced tough challenges. We've decided to create a series of activities for everyone in the family to keep us emotionally balanced! Feel free to create your own twist or add to the activity!

Day 4: Blow bubbles ‘slo-mo’ style, emphasizing a big deep breath in through the nose to fill the bubble… and out through the mouth as slow as possible

Mindfulness activities can be simple and can be practiced by young children as well, with positive outcomes shown in children as young as 6 years old.

Mindfulness is simply about paying attention to whatever you are experiencing in the present moment. It could be what you are seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, smelling, thinking, and feeling. Mindfulness practice is also about accepting our experience without labeling it, i.e., without thinking that the experience was “good” or “bad” / “right” or “wrong”. For example, if we apply mindfulness to times when we fall down on our knees, we can mindfully attend to the sharp sensation on our knees instead of thinking about how "unlucky" we are or how "bad" this experience is.

Studies found that children and adolescents who practiced mindfulness regularly have the following benefits such as having better attention spans, are calmer, sleep better, have better-coping mechanisms with anger, and generally display fewer symptoms of anxiety!
